A centre back with great aerial ability, Lex Baillie joined Saints in the summer of 1991 for a fee of £90,000 from Celtic where he had been a reliable back up player at Parkhead side for a number of seasons.

Now 25 years of age, manager Davie Hay believed the centre back was at the the perfect stage of his career to become a regular starter in the top flight, however the big Lanarkshire defender struggled in a badly toiling Saints side during a dismal campaign that would end in relegation with Bailie appearing just 19 times out of the 48 matches played by the club that season.

The following season after relegation, Baillie was one of the players kept by Jimmy Bone after a significant clear out, and the defender was an important player at a lower level also providing a real threat from set pieces with 4 goals in his 42 matches that campaign.

Towards the end of that 1992/93 season after a 2-1 defeat at Ochilview where Stirling Albion were playing that campaign, Saints announced Baillie was leaving the club and with promotion looking unlikely with only 5 matches remaining, the defender had now played his last game for the club and left Paisley in early April 1993 after 61 appearances.

The following season Baillie would join Dunfermline, but after just 15 matches for the Pars he announced he was retiring from the game aged just 27 and would pursue a career in the Police where is now Chief Inspector in Lanarkshire.

French born Cameroonian national Stephane Bahoken joined Saints on loan at the end of the 2013 summer transfer window from one of the best teams in France, topflight outfit Nice, to bolster an attack consisting of now veteran striker Steven Thompson and pretty much nobody else.

Saints had been recommended to Bahoken by Esmael Goncalves who had left the club a few months earlier and the 2013 League Cup winning hero predicted big things for his friend in Paisley, however it just didn’t work out for the young forward in Scotland.

Bahoken struggled to adapt to the Scottish game and having come from the French Riviera to the west of Scotland, perhaps he didn’t settle at in this country, however in total the forward played under 200 minutes for the club over just 5 appearances and even had the indignity of Saints attempting to return him to Nice, but the French club refusing in January 2014. After returning to France, Bahoken has had a decent career mainly in Ligue One, and has made 22 appearances for Cameroon scoring 4 times as of May 2022.

Fernando Azevedo

Name: Fernando Azevedo
Date of Birth: 19th May 1941
Place of Birth: Brazil
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Forward
Signed: July 1965 from FC Guatemala City (Guatemala)
Departed: Released October 1965
Debut: 11th September 1965 v Morton (0-1)
Final Match: 11th September 1965 v Morton (0-1)

Fernando Azevedo was the first and as of April 2022, the only Brazillian to ever play for St Mirren, but his time at the club was fleeting to say the least and he was released after only three months but would eventually play professionally again in 1967 over in the USA, where the man who took him to Saints, Doug Millward, signed him again!

The summer of 1965 was a curious time in Scottish football, with the game going through a golden era where domestic clubs would challenge for European honours right up until the 1990’s, therefore South American agent Jose Ramos decided to target the market in Scotland with the most coveted commodity on the sporting planet at the time; Brazilian footballers.

Two of the leading clubs during this period, Celtic and Dunfermline, (Jock Stein was now Celtic manager having managed the Pars to great success) were targeted first by Ramos with various players, but at Love Street arrived forward Azevedo and centre back Roberto Faria for a trial, with the club expected to pay travel and accommodation for the South American pair throughout any stay at the club. Saints boss Doug Millward was impressed enough at first and decided to sign both on short term contracts to see if they could adapt to Scottish football.

As Millward waited on international clearance for his new signings, Saints took on Northampton Town on the 7th August 1965 in the now defunct Paisley Charity Cup Final in front of 6,000 fans, who were entertained by a ball juggling Azevedo at half time to whet the appetite of the home support, but with Archie Gemmill breaking his ankle and a 2-0 defeat to the English club it’s unlikely any fan in attendance rushed home to talk about the half time show.

Just over a month later and with all the paperwork now in order, Azevedo was picked by Millward for the opening day of the 1965/66 top flight season, and a derby against Morton at Love Street. Just under 8,000 fans were in attendance for the first ever sighting of a Brazilian in Scottish football, however any thoughts of Saints unearthing the next Pelé were quickly forgotten as the performance of the 24 year old centre forward was overwhelmingly below average.

A few weeks later, Azevedo appeared in a Renfrewshire Cup match against Babcok and Wilcox along with Roberto Faria, and despite winning 3-1, this was their last ever involvement with the first team and both would leave the following month. Where Faria ended up after Paisley is unknown, but Azevedo signed for newly formed USA side Baltimore Bays in 1967, scoring 8 times in 15 matches for the club before vanishing into obscurity.

Date of Birth: 27th September 1956
Place of Birth: Glasgow, Scotland

Having been top scorer in the English top flight, scored at one of the two world cups he appeared in, and impressively netted at a rate of 1 goal every 2 matches for four years during his time at Barcelona; even at the age of 34, Glasgow born Steve Archibald seemed like the ideal man to solve Saints goal scoring issues during the 1990/91 season when he was announced as Tony Fitzpatrick’s latest signing on the 7th November 1990.

These were ambitious times at St Mirren, with Archibald on a reputed £5,000 a week and the same bonus per goal, making him the alleged highest paid player in Scotland, and this was after Fitzpatrick had spent over £1.5 million in transfers in the past season and a quarter.

Before he had even kicked a ball, Archibald used his influence to convince his former captain at Barcelona, the 60 times capped Spanish midfielder, Victor Munoz, to swap Serie A giants Sampdoria for St Mirren and he successfully convinced both parties to do a deal, so the following week Fitzpatrick authorised a cheque for £30k to be sent in return for the 33-year-old to spend the rest of the season in Paisley.

It’s unthinkable for any of this to happen now, but three days after Archibald signed for Saints and with Victor still settling his affairs in Italy before making the move, Aberdeen travelled to Paisley for a Premier Division match with “Archie” wearing his customary number 8 shirt in a typically grim and drizzly late Autumn Day in the north side of town.

Archibald had of course made his considerable reputation a decade or so earlier at the Dons during the Fergie years at Pittodrie, and although those days had now finished, this Aberdeen side was still one to be genuinely feared and actually only missed out on the title that campaign during the final match, therefore it wasn’t a massive shock that Saints were beaten on the day, however the 0-4 score-line was extremely disappointing especially as Archibald had missed a glorious one on one chance at 0-1.

The forward had last been in Scotland only the previous season at Hibs, when he was in fabulous form, however this was perhaps a campaign too far at the top level for one of the best Scottish players of his generation and it took until his ninth appearance to find the net; on the 2nd January 1991 during a 2-2 draw at Love Street with Motherwell.

He would net again the following match, but any hope of a sustained run of goals quickly evaporated during a dreadful season for the club where only 5 wins were recorded in 39 matches in all competitions with one of them being against bottom tier Stranraer away in the Scottish Cup. In fact, in the 27 matches played after Archibald joined the club, only three were won; that match at Stair Park and two 1-0 victories over Hibs.

Thankfully relegation was scrapped for reconstruction so Saints were saved from demotion, but the points total of 19 (24 in modern times) is proof enough of how bad a season it was, resulting in Tony Fitzpatrick being replaced with Davie Hay in March 1991, who quickly indicated he wasn’t interested in either Archibald or Munoz remaining in Paisley and both would leave the club at the end of the season.

Archibald played a total of 17 matches for Saints scoring twice, and would later have brief spells at Clyde, Reading, Ayr Utd and Fulham before taking over as Player/Manager at East Fife where he would play until he was 40, including the opening match of the 1996/97 season at Bayview which was won 4-0 by Saints.

Former Scotland captain Roy Aitken signed for Saints in August 1991 for a fee of £150,000 from Newcastle United and would play just one season in Paisley, easily identifiable as arguably the poorest in the entire history of the club. However the 32 year old was a rare bright spot in the darkest of seasons, winning multiple player of the year awards as well as his final Scotland cap whilst attempting to keep the club in the top flight.

Aitken made his debut on the 21st August 1991 against newly promoted Falkirk at Love Street, and his first involvement in a Saints shirt was a thunderous tackle on Bairns midfielder Neil Duffy, showing he’d lost none of his legendary will to win so evident in his 15 years at Celtic which had ended the previous year.

The 0-0 draw that day stopped an incredibly poor start to the season where Saints had already lost three times, conceding 10 goals in the process to Hibs, Dundee Utd and another newly promoted side in Airdrie, as well as scrape through against Brechin on penalties in the League Cup after a 3-3 draw.

The side did improve with Aitken in it, but it was still nowhere near enough and Saints rather pathetically dropped out the top flight at the end of the season after 15 years in the Premier Division that had delivered everything apart from the league title.

To his utmost credit, Aitken stated he was willing to stay at the club to help the promotion effort, however the financial madness that had followed winning the cup in 1987 was about to seriously catch up with the club, and Aitken was sold to Aberdeen for £100k in the pre-season, who he would later go onto manage.

Following relegation from the Premiership and the appointment of young manager Ian Murray from Dumbarton in 2015, the new Saints boss bolstered his squad with a number of players from the lower leagues including 28 year former Rangers, Hamilton, Alloa, Ayr, Stranraer and Dumbarton playmaker Scott Agnew, who returned to full time football for the first time since being released by Rangers a decade previously.

Although Agnew possessed a very decent left foot, scoring three superb long-range efforts in his first few matches for the club, the Ayrshire born midfielder struggled to retain a first team place as young Stevie Mallan was already emerging as the best playmaker at the club by a distance and drifted out of first team contention following the sacking of Murray and appointment of Alex Rae.

After a brief social media scandal where Agnew faced severe criticism for tweeting in favour of Rangers immediately after the Renfrewshire Derby, the midfielder was released having played 28 times for Saints and scoring 5 times. He would re-join Stranraer and later play for East Fife and Airdrie.
