Following relegation from the Premiership and the appointment of young manager Ian Murray from Dumbarton in 2015, the new Saints boss bolstered his squad with a number of players from the lower leagues including 28 year former Rangers, Hamilton, Alloa, Ayr, Stranraer and Dumbarton playmaker Scott Agnew, who returned to full time football for the first time since being released by Rangers a decade previously.
Although Agnew possessed a very decent left foot, scoring three superb long-range efforts in his first few matches for the club, the Ayrshire born midfielder struggled to retain a first team place as young Stevie Mallan was already emerging as the best playmaker at the club by a distance and drifted out of first team contention following the sacking of Murray and appointment of Alex Rae.
After a brief social media scandal where Agnew faced severe criticism for tweeting in favour of Rangers immediately after the Renfrewshire Derby, the midfielder was released having played 28 times for Saints and scoring 5 times. He would re-join Stranraer and later play for East Fife and Airdrie.
