THE SPRING CUP

The Spring Cup was played just once, at the end of the 1975/76 season after league reconstruction had left the lower leagues with only 26 league matches that season. Due to the lack of interest from fans however, it was decided after only one tournament that it would be scrapped in favour of an extra round of league fixtures from 1976/77, taking each club to 39 matches.

Saints reached the quarter final but were knocked out by Morton. Airdrie would win the maiden and only Spring Cup. Various records are listed below:

THE ANGLO-SCOTTISH CUP

The competition comprised mainly of top division Scottish and England sides that did not qualify for Europe, this change of competing nations implemented in 1975 to replace the original 1970 Texaco Cup format that included Northern Irish, Irish and Welsh sides at the outset, before the two Irish nations played their own competition for security reasons from 1972.

Saints only entered 3 times, reaching the final twice, the only Scottish club that managed to do so, winning it once, in 1979/80. The tournament was abolished in 1981, and reverted to an English only competition now known as the EFL trophy. Various records are listed below:

The Challenge Cup is for clubs outside the top flight, and from 2018 included teams from other nations and the Colt/B teams of Premiership clubs.

Saints senior team first competed in this tournament in 1992 during the third season of the tournament and have reached the final three times, winning it once, in 2005. It has often been treated less important than the other domestic competitions by various Saints managers due to promotion being given the priority.

The Colt team first participated in 2018/19, and have made it as far as the 4th Round in 2019/20, where they were knocked out by Welsh side, Wrexham, at the Racecourse Ground. Various records are listed below:

Saints first played in the tournament in the 1880/81 season, following admission to both the Renfrewshire and Scottish football associations toward the end of the previous season.

We have played in every season since, with the only breaks being for both world wars, winning the trophy on three occasions and appearing in a total of 6 finals.

As one of the founder members of league football in Scotland, Saints have played every season of the competition since 1890, and are one of only 4 clubs remaining from the 10 founders, with Dumbarton, Hearts and Celtic the others.

The only break in the history of the competition was during WWII between 1939-45, when unofficial regional leagues were played instead. The 1939/40 season did actually start, but was abandoned in early September following the outbreak of the war after only 5 matches, and no winner declared.

Saints have never been out of the top 2 divisions, and have spent over 100 seasons in the top flight. Various records are stated below:

  • Saints exit Europe due to 2 late goals conceded in Bergen, during one of the wettest nights any of the 750 Saints fans present will ever likely experience.
  • With the season a further week on, the gap in match sharpness evident from the first leg, was closed almost completely, and this game much more even.
  • The visitors started brightly, but conceded against the run of the play after only 5 minutes when Soltvedt fired home.
  • Undeterred, Saints continue to press and create chances, with Olusnaya causing considerable problems with his pace and impressive link up play.
  • As the match hung in the balance, Saints made a number of changes after the hour mark, and two of these players combined to level the tie, when a brilliant Fraser Taylor corner was thumped into net by a towering header from Alex Iacovitti.
  • For the next ten minutes Saints pushed for a winner, with Brann clearly rattled, and after brilliant play from Mandron, Olusnaya slipped at the back post on the sodden pitch with the goal at his mercy from the cross.
  • A few minutes later, Myhre scored a second for Brann, and then on full time a third scrappy goal was forced home to seal the tie and knock Saints out, despite a fine display in the mountain city.
  • Brann would be knocked out in the next and final qualifying round by Astana of Kazakhstan.
