The Summer Cup was initially played during WWII, for 5 seasons and was an “unofficial tournament” due to football rules during this conflict, despite being treated seriously by clubs, players, fans and media alike.
Saints would win this Cup in 1943, which was considered a fine achievement at the time; firstly as they beat Morton in the semi finals, who had arguably the best player in the world, Stanley Matthews, as a guest; and secondly, a domestically dominant Rangers team was overcome in the final, who weren’t affected by call ups to the military as much as other clubs, and enjoyed relative stability during this period.
Almost 20 years later, an attempt to revive the popularity of the tournament was tried, however it didn’t have the desired impact and after 2 seasons was abandoned, despite it having an “official” classification. Various records are listed below:
