All official Scottish football was abandoned on the 4th September 1939 due to the outbreak of WWII. The SFA and SFL instructed the formation of ‘unofficial’ regional divisions with relaxed player registration rules allowing ‘guest’ players to appear for clubs. Any honours won by clubs or appearances and goals by players were not deemed ‘official’ and would not be counted in the same way as peace time competitions. Saints were placed in the Southern League. The Emergency War Cup would also be played this season.
