Englishman Hemming arrived at Saints in late June 2023, on loan from English Championship side Middlesbrough, with the expectation that he would be understudy to established number one at the club, Trevor Carson.

Unknown to both the media and supporters however, was that privately Carson had requested a transfer and Hemming had been brought to Paisley as number one, a fact confirmed by Stephen Robinson on the eve of Saints season starting at Montrose in the League Cup.

Hemming had appeared in over 60 matches on loan before joining Saints, so was no rookie, and the big keeper played every minute of the 2023/24 season, 46 matches in total, making 15 shut-outs as he became a firm fans favourite due to his passion for the club and total commitment to the team, features not always prominent in loan players.

Saints tried in the latter half of the season to negotiate a fee for the permanent transfer of the keeper, who publicly stated his desire to move to Paisley, however Middlesbrough refused to negotiate as they seen him as part of their first team plans for 2024/25, and on the 23rd May 2024 it was confirmed by all parties than Hemming would not be returning to Saints.
